HOW COUNSELLING WORKS

We listen first, then narrow the field — in that order.

Most students arrive with a country already chosen and a course picked off a ranking table. We start further back: what you have studied, what you are actually good at, what you can afford, and what you want to be doing in five years. The shortlist comes out of that conversation rather than before it.

Counselling is free, and it stays free

Institutions pay us a commission when a student they accept actually enrols. That is the whole business model, and it is why there is no fee to you at any point — not for the first session, not for the applications, not for the visa file.

It also creates an obvious question about whose interest we serve, so here is the honest answer: we earn nothing if you enrol somewhere we do not represent, and we will still tell you when that is the right choice. A student who ends up on the wrong course does not finish it, and an agent with a reputation for that stops getting referrals.

WHAT A COUNSELLOR DOES

The work behind a shortlist.

A counselling relationship runs from your first conversation to your first week on campus, and covers considerably more than picking universities.

When should I first speak to a counsellor?

Earlier than most students think. Twelve months before your intended intake is comfortable; six is workable; three means you are choosing from what is left rather than from what is best. The reason is sequencing. English tests take weeks to prepare and days to report. Scholarship deadlines usually close before admission deadlines. Financial evidence has to be deposited and held before a visa can be filed. Start late and those steps stack on top of each other instead of running in order.

What to bring to your first session

Nothing is mandatory, but the more of this you have to hand, the more useful the first conversation is.

  • ✓Academic transcriptsEvery year, including any backlogs or repeated papers
  • ✓English test resultsIf you have sat one; if not, we plan it in the session
  • ✓A budget rangeWhat your family can realistically fund per year
  • ✓Destination preferencesAnd what is driving them, which matters more than the list
  • ✓Work experienceInternships and jobs, particularly for master's applications
  • ✓A timelineThe intake you are aiming at, so we can work backwards

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Is counselling really free?

Yes, completely. There is no consultation fee, no application handling fee and no charge for visa assistance. Institutions pay us when a student enrols, which funds the service. The one thing you pay for directly is what any applicant pays — university application fees where they exist, your English test, and the government visa fee. We tell you what each of those costs before you commit to anything.

How do you get paid, then?

It depends on your course, university and timeline. A CI Study counsellor will answer this for your exact situation in a free 45-minute consultation.
