KEY TAKEAWAYS
What this page covers
- The SAT is digital and adaptive, running 2 hours 14 minutes across two sections.
- Scores run from 400 to 1600, combining two section scores of 200 to 800.
- Many US colleges are test-optional, so submitting a score is a strategic decision.
- Merit scholarships still weigh scores heavily even where admission is test-optional.
- For Bangladesh the total cost is around US$111: a US$68 registration fee plus a US$43 regional fee.
- Around seven international test dates run each year, with registration closing weeks in advance.
ABOUT THE TEST
Optional at many colleges — which is not the same as unhelpful.
A large number of US colleges are now test-optional, so the real question is whether your score would strengthen the application. If it sits above the college's middle range, submitting it helps, particularly for merit scholarships. If it sits below, you are usually better off not sending it. We work that out before you commit to months of preparation.
- 01Test-optional is strategicSubmit only when the score helps your case.
- 02Scholarship weightMerit awards still lean heavily on scores.
- 03Adaptive by moduleThe second module adjusts to your first-module performance.

What the SAT measures
The SAT is now digital and adaptive by module: your performance in the first module of a section determines the difficulty of the second. That makes the test shorter than the paper version it replaced and changes how you should pace yourself, because early accuracy shapes the ceiling of your score.
Because so many colleges are test-optional, the first question is not how to prepare but whether to sit it at all. If your likely score sits above the middle range published by your target colleges, submitting helps — particularly for merit money. If it sits below, you are usually better off not sending it.
Exam pattern
Two sections, each split into two adaptive modules, sat on a laptop or tablet using the official testing application.
Section | Time | Format | What it tests |
|---|---|---|---|
Reading and Writing | 64 minutes | Two modules | Short passages, one question each; grammar and rhetoric |
Maths | 70 minutes | Two modules | Algebra, advanced maths, data analysis and geometry |
How scoring works
Two section scores are summed for the total. Many colleges superscore, combining your best section results across sittings.
Component | Detail |
|---|---|
Section scores | 200 to 800 for each of the two sections |
Total score | 400 to 1600 |
Superscoring | Best sections combined across dates at many colleges |
Calculator | Built into the testing app, permitted throughout maths |
SAT fees for Bangladesh
Candidates outside the United States pay the base registration fee plus a regional surcharge.
Fee type | Amount (USD) |
|---|---|
Registration fee | $68 |
Non-US regional fee | $43 |
Total for Bangladesh | Around $111 |
Additional score reports | Charged per report beyond the free sends |
Fees are set by the College Board and revised periodically. Confirm the current amount on the official College Board site before registering.
Dates and registration
International sittings are fewer than in the United States and registration deadlines close several weeks ahead of each date, so the calendar drives the study plan rather than the other way round.
Scores are typically released within about two weeks. If you are applying for early rounds, work backwards from the college deadline and leave room for one retake.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently asked questions
Do I need the SAT if colleges are test-optional?
Only if the score would help you. Test-optional means a college will read your application without a score, not that a good score is ignored. The practical test is simple: find the middle 50 percent range each of your target colleges publishes. If your practice scores sit above that range, submit. If they sit below it, apply without. Where a score almost always helps is merit scholarships, which frequently still use score thresholds even at test-optional institutions.
